On May 1st, Atlassian announced the unification of Jira Work Management (JWM) and Jira Software (JSW) into a single tool. It will now simply be called Jira and will offer easier collaboration and goal alignment for all teams, from software developers to marketing specialists.
By combining the best features of both tools, the ultimate work environment for project, product, and team management has been created, which is clearer, more efficient, and more powerful than ever before.
Why is Tool Unification Happening?
According to our consultant František Špaček, unification will make it easier for users to choose the most suitable tool:
“Agile projects are becoming more widespread and used in a wide range of areas, requiring a flexible and universal tool. While Jira Software is well-established and widely accepted among users, Jira Work Management is relatively newer and less known. Merging these tools eliminates confusion about selecting the right tool and unifies licenses, making their management easier. We also had to explain to customers that, despite its name, Jira Software can be used to manage any agile project and is not just a tool for IT companies.”
For new users, the unified platform will be simpler and more intuitive for the first steps in the ecosystem. Integrating both tools into one will help users navigate and utilize functionalities more efficiently, without the need to manage two separate systems. This opens the door to better collaboration and more effective project management across different teams and departments.
What Does Jira Unification Mean for You?
The changes affect only users of the cloud versions of JSW and JWM.
Existing Jira Software users can be assured that the transition to the new Jira system will be smooth, with no changes in pricing or the way the platform is used. Your projects will continue as before, and you will automatically gain access to new features and improvements without any disruption.
Starting May 1, 2024, it will no longer be possible to purchase Jira Work Management individually. Customers who have a JWM subscription will still have access to JWM until early 2025, when their JWM subscription will automatically be converted to a Jira subscription. The price of the new Jira tool will be the same as the original Jira Software.
New integrations and improvements
With the new version, you will have access to a range of features, improvements, and adjustments that will increase flexibility, clarity, and team collaboration:
- Goals: Set and track goals directly in the app, providing visibility across teams and aligning efforts with company objectives.
- Plans: Try out enhanced planning capabilities with new views, such as calendar and updated summary views, making it easier to oversee and adjust project statuses.
- List View: A view that was previously available only in JWM, now accessible in all project types. It allows more efficient tracking of issues and data manipulation in a clear spreadsheet format.
- Atlassian Intelligence: This new feature will help you better organize your work. It will suggest how to break large tasks (epics) into smaller tasks (issues) or even individual steps (sub-tasks). This will make project management more efficient.
The unification of Jira Software and Jira Work Management into a single integrated platform brings many benefits for different types of teams. With easier access to powerful tools and features, teams can collaborate more effectively, better coordinate their goals, and complete projects more easily. This integration ensures that all team members are on the same page, making it easier to track progress and achieve shared goals.
