Client
Solargis provides meteorological data, software, and consulting services that help solar power plants worldwide identify weather-related risks and optimize their performance.
Client's problem
The client approached us with the migration of a mid-sized Jira Software instance from server to cloud. The company had conducted a test migration using the standard migration tool, which did not meet their expectations. In addition to moving to a supported platform, the client needed to clean up unnecessary data, ensure GSuite for user management, and migrate the Tempo, Email This Issue, and Smart Checklist apps.
Solution
The project involved a technical team of three people – from the client’s side, an administrator who managed the Jira server and a representative from the project office; from our side, an Atlassian Solution Architect. The client performed part of the preparatory work (upgrading Jira to the latest version, cleaning up unnecessary data) and fully verified the transferred instance on their own, which significantly accelerated the work on the project.
Before the actual migration, we conducted an environment analysis, which included a review of the overall state of Jira, evaluation of migration complexity, and an initial evaluation migration. During the evaluation migration, we discovered an initially hidden data inconsistency, which we subsequently resolved with Atlassian’s support. After that, there was nothing to prevent us from planning and executing the test migration.
The test migration helped us verify the correctness of the proposed approach and confirm that there were no obstacles for the production migration. After its successful evaluation, we prepared a production migration plan, which was completed using an XML backup in one evening. The following day, we evaluated and approved the migration.
